Dairy Producers React to National Dairy Council’s Price Increase: “Is The Farmer So Harassed, How Much Is The Damage?”

Dairy producers reacted to the fact that the National Dairy Council did not increase the milk price, which was 7.5 lira, at the last meeting, after the Treasury and Finance Minister Nureddin Nebati’s statement “The reason for the increase in the feed price is the milk price”. Producers, “Is the farmer harassed so much? How far is the damage?” saying; Baki Remzi Suiçmez, President of the Chamber of Agricultural Engineers, described Nabati’s statements as ‘irrational’ and drew attention to the fact that if milk prices are not increased, more animals will be sent to slaughter. Tevfik Keskin, Chairman of the Turkish Dairy Producers Central Union, said, “The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has established justice together with the council, and the right decision has been taken.”

The demands of milk producers for an increase in milk prices were not met. The National Dairy Council, at its meeting on September 15; It did not increase the milk price, which was 7 lira and 50 kuruş. According to the decision taken at the meeting, some expenses such as transportation fee will be borne by the industrialist.

The Minister of Treasury and Finance Nureddin Nebati said at a meeting with industry representatives in Adana last June that when milk prices are increased, feed prices also increase, and that there will be no increase in milk prices.

“NOW I HAVE ONE DAIRY COW LEFT ON THE FARM WITH 35 ANIMALS”

Dairy producers reacted to the fact that the milk price was not increased. PHOENIX News Speaking to his agency, producer Mehmet Kani from Izmir said, “I now have one dairy cow left in the farm where there are 35 animals.”

“We left the animal. The reason for this is not being able to earn money from milk. How far is the damage? We have been to Ankara many times. For once ‘why did you come here?’ No one said. Because they don’t have yogurt, milk, everything is expensive. Let them gnaw on concrete in the metropolis. We have stopped this production now. I will only meet my own needs. No matter what anyone eats. I will no longer be able to sell my land, my house, my barn left by my ancestors and grandfathers. What is it? When milk is increased, inflation increases. Diesel that increases inflation. Hay 1500 liras in its place, it goes up to 3 thousand liras when it comes here. Why, diesel and transportation. Why does the feed that lowers the diesel, think about electricity, so production should increase. Because I couldn’t add urea fertilizer, I couldn’t get production from silage fields this year. He said, “I bought 23 tons from where I bought 35 tons. Can the farmer be harassed so much? My children want to go abroad.”

“WE DO NOT ACCEPT THE PRICE OF THE NATIONAL MILK COUNCIL”

Çanakkale producer Halil Kaya said, “We do not accept the price given by the National Milk Council. As milk producers, we condemn this situation. As farmers, it is very difficult for us to survive with input costs. We want the National Dairy Council to meet again and take steps to give a fair price. Input costs. “It is currently showing an increase of up to 300-350 percent. We cannot survive like this. Our pregnant animals are slaughtered,” he said.

MILK MANUFACTURERS ASSOCIATION CHAIRMAN KESKİN: “COUNCIL MADE THE RIGHT DECISION”

Tevfik Keskin, Chairman of the Central Union of Milk Producers of Turkey, said that “The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry established justice together with the council. The council took the right decision” regarding the milk price of USK, saying that he found the decision positive, but that there were a few shortcomings.

Making a statement to ANKA News Agency, Keskin said:

“The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, together with the council, has changed the wrong system and established justice since 2016. Industrialists put an annotation at the meeting. They said, ‘We do not accept this.’ We are making a decision, but it is a decent decision. I don’t understand why the producer group reacted.

“CHEAP FEED WILL BE GIVEN TO MANUFACTURERS IN OCTOBER”

Keskin stated that he was informed that “barley and corn will be given to the producers cheaply as of October” during the meetings, and listed the demands they conveyed to the Ministry of Finance as follows:

“I said to the Ministry of Finance, ‘If he wants to protect the farmer due to inflation, the price that comes out of the council should be the desired price for the producer.’ He can’t get it because he can’t afford it.”

ZMO PRESIDENT SUİÇMEZ: “IF WE REDUCE THE FEED PRICE, THERE IS NO NEED TO INCREASE RAW MILK PRICE ALREADY”

Baki Remzi Suiçmez, President of the Chamber of Agricultural Engineers (ZMO), stated that they found Minister Nebati’s statements irrational and told ANKA:

“Feed is the most important cost in milk. The National Dairy Council had it tied. In our opinion, the Ministry of Treasury and Finance made an irrational statement on this subject: “If we increase milk prices, feed prices will increase, so we are suppressing raw milk prices.” So, what is the result of this? The result of this is that the producer sends dairy animals to slaughter at prices below their costs, this affects the size of meat, and animals will be imported…

The basic ingredient is feed. If we reduce the price of feed, there is no need to increase the price of raw milk, but in a place where the cost is currently 9 liras, the reference price has been announced as 7 and a half lira net this time. The perception operation that is currently being carried out as if the raw milk reference price has been increased is extremely wrong. Where the raw milk reference price is 9 TL, it should be 10 TL so that dairy animals are not slaughtered and we do not consume expensive products in milk and dairy products, meat and meat products."
