TURKEY POSTS ENGLISH: LET THE MANUFACTURER SET THE PRİCE- 16 EYLÜL 2022
In Elazig, grape producers united against companies that made purchases before the upcoming vintage. Their demand is that the purchase price be at least 18 liras.
There are only a few days left for the vintage in Elazig, which is one of the important cities of the country in grape growing. Producers in Koruk, Dambuyuk and Esenkent villages of Elazig started a struggle against the grape industry to set their own prices. Producers pointed out that buyer companies set prices without calculating economic inputs, and stated that this is why they took the decision. According to the producers, the price of grapes should be at least 18 TL.
The producers made the following statement: “Producers have the right to determine the product price fairly after the economic inputs have been calculated. We want our demands to be met in order to be less affected by this crisis. Prices should be determined by calculating the economic inputs of the producers before the purchase of the products. The product price must be at least 18 TL. Manufacturers should be addressed.”
THEY SHOULD HAVE A VOICE
Evaluating the issue, Çiftçi-Sen General Organization Secretary Adnan Çobanoğlu noted that the producer wanted to have a say. Çobanoğlu said, “Companies come to the fore when product prices are determined,” and continued as follows: “Companies make purchases by agreeing among themselves and placing price limits. They don’t even negotiate with the manufacturers. The President made a statement on the price of raisins in Manisa. The person he asked next to him, ‘Is this price good?’ is also a fresh grape exporter and the head of an important company… That’s why the struggle of the producers in Elazig is very valuable.”
INFLATION IN AGRICULTURE 142 PERCENT
Agricultural inflation is still very high. According to the data of TURKSTAT, the Agricultural Products Producer Price Index (Agriculture-PPI) was 142 percent despite the harvest season. Prices slumped after peaking last month. The highest level was recorded in agriculture-PPI with 158 percent in July. Baki Remzi Suiçmez, President of TMMOB Chamber of Agricultural Engineers, evaluated the data and said that ‘the figures are unacceptable’. Suiçmez said that inflation will not decrease without decreasing input costs and said: “Production costs should be reduced. At least, the producer should be supported directly in diesel and fertilizer. Farmers and companies should not be confronted. We can reduce this inflation with long-term planning.”
